< back to summer reading

Dear Parents,
Now that the school year is winding down, it is time for a well-deserved break! Yet, while we are all taking our vacations, enjoying the balmy weather, and following more relaxed schedules, it is also important that our children continue to maintain and build upon the skills and achievements they gained this year in school.

This summer, every student entering grades one through eight will be receiving summer work in both reading and math. Please encourage your children to read the summer books chosen by the teachers of the upcoming grades and to complete the summer math review packets, which were developed by this yearˇ¦s teachers. Finishing a little bit of the summer work each day will ensure that the assignments do not become overwhelming during the last days of August.

Studies have shown that students who read and practice their math skills during the summer return to school ready to add to their previous knowledge without losing ground during their time away from school. As such, the summer math packet will be reviewed during the first days of school; questions will be answered; and studentsˇ¦ understanding will be assessed. The reading selections will be used throughout the year in discussions relating them to the classroom literature for each grade level. The summer reading will form a common body of knowledge for use in discussing and comparing literary conventions.

Your children have been given the assignments and packets for each subject area, and the information in the packets has been thoroughly explained. Of course, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school. I am delighted to work with you to help our students achieve continued success.

Sincerely,
