Guidance
The MDYHS Guidance Department engages with each student, encouraging them to recognize their own strengths, to become self-advocates and to confront challenges with patience and perseverance.
To ensure that all students are receiving the support they need, each grade has a designated guidance counselor and a grade principal. The partnership of guidance and administration provides students with a support team that is focused on their academic and social/emotional growth.
Our professional guidance team, seeks to preliminary support all students in the following areas:
- Transitioning from Elementary to high-school
- Ensuring their 4 years at MDYHS are successful and enjoyable
- Preparing students for success in their post-high school years
- Social emotional teaching
- Promoting a safe and confidential environment, where students feel supported
- Provide psycho educational learning
- Test taking skills
- Note taking skills
- Time management
- Organizational skills
- Social skills
Above all, our guidance team understands that each student is an individual and our professionals are prepared to collaborate with the student, the parents, the teachers and the administration to develop a plan that best fits the student and their context.
In addition, our guidance team designs and implements educational programming, including interactive sessions on the following topics:
- Internet safety
- Healthy eating
- Addiction
- Healthy Relationships
- Promoting kindness

Lastly, our guidance team works closely with the SAFE program, which leads weekly small group sessions. In their SAFE classes, students have the opportunity to discuss every day struggles and are encouraged to express their views and to respect all voices.
